So you’ve decided that your opportunity to export is a good one, now what? How do you find and source wines suitable for your project? While this is too large a topic to answer in one measly blog post, here are three key considerations when searching for the perfect wine for your product.
- Price point – as a general rule, wine quality and price track one another. Save yourself some time and only seek wines that will fit your project’s unique profile. I would suggest working backwards here. What is the target retail price in the market for the wine you look to sell? What price does the distributor need to buy wine from you to achieve this price? What are your packaging, labeling, transportation and logistics expenses? These questions will help you establish your budget for bulk wine, greatly narrowing your search by keeping the end consumer in mind.
- Volume – as with many products, wine benefits from economies of scale. Do you plan to export 500 cases per shipment, or 5,000? This will greatly influence where to look for an ideal partner. I will discuss where to go for each of these volume levels in a future post.
